On July14, 2008, we had a severe disk crash of the JCET and GEST webserver. As much of the material and content were lost (including the structure of the site), we have used this opportunity to rebuild the JCET site using Movable Type 4.0.

We appreciate the patience of those who have borne with us through this tough time.

The Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET) operates under a cooperative agreement between the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). JCET meets the common interest of UMBC and GSFC to develop new technology for environmental remote sensing. Formed in 1995, JCET has grown to 18 Research Professors including four tenured faculty. JCET has an additional 11 Research Scientists and 4 Research Associates. JCET's research focuses on themes which align with NASA's Earth Science Interests:  engineering, mesoscale atmospheric processes, climate and radiation, atmospheric chemistry and dynamics, hydrospheric and biospheric sciences, and solar system science including geodesy and geophysics.

JCET is governed by an Executive Board made up of the Director of Earth Sciences, three Laboratory Directors from GSFC, three Deans, three Department Chairs from UMBC, and the Director and Associate Directors of JCET. The Executive Board has developed both a charter and set of by-laws which together form the governing principles of the Center.

A central requirement of JCET is the integration of the faculty into the academic life of the University. The faculty of JCET are expected to teach at least every other year and are active in advising students. JCET faculty are affiliated and teach in Physics, Geography and Environmental Systems, Chemistry and Biochemistry,  Mathematics/Statistics, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. JCET Faculty led the formation of UMBC's Atmospheric Physics Program and are contributing strongly to Geography and Environmental Systems' new Graduate Program. Graduate students in JCET work both at the UMBC campus and on site at the Goddard Space Flight Center.

JCET faculty are active researchers as well. They are expected to function as Principal Investigators on funded research, to provide scientific leadership for the Center, and to provide service to the scientific community through peer review roles on journals, proposals, and research grants.

As Executive Director of JCET, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the JCET website. If there is information you do not find on these pages, please feel free to contact me at hoff@umbc.edu or 410-455-1610.
