Research Scientist Positions

Post Doctoral Position

Subject to funding approval, the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET) is seeking a Research Faculty appointment at the Post-doctoral Scientist level. JCET is a Cooperative Agreement between the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to collaborate in research programs in the Earth, Information, and Instrumentation sciences. The successful candidate will work at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD within the Microwave Instrument Technology Branch, Code 555.

In radar atmospheric remote sensing, Doppler velocity measurements are important for hydrometeor particle size retrieval and classification, for better understanding of the weather system dynamics associating locally intense up and down drafts, mass and latent heat transportation in atmospheric processes. Future spaceborne atmospheric profiling radars will include Doppler capability to provide estimates of vertical velocities of hydrometeors. However, Doppler measurements from space are problematic due to the spectral spread of velocity induced by the high velocity of the spacecraft and finite beamwidth of the antenna. Researchers at the Goddard Space Flight Center are working on techniques to improve Doppler measurements from space. A post doctoral scientist is sought to help develop the computational framework for an ensemble detector whereby correlated noise is mixed with radar returns and to assess the improvement in Doppler measurements that can be achieved processing the ensemble sets.

Requirements – The ideal candidate will have excellent programing skills (preferably Matlab) and a strong background in stochastic process theory, statistical analysis, computational physics, microwave atmospheric remote sensing, and research experience.

For best consideration, submit a cover letter (indicating position #612-15-02 a complete curriculum vitae, visa status (if applicable) and names and telephone numbers of three references by September 28, 2015 (application materials for this position will be accepted until position is filled) to: Ms. Danita Eichenlaub, Administrative Director, via email to eichenla AT UMBC is an Equal Employment/Affirmative Action employer.
