Casasanto, Valerie


Valerie Casasanto has been the Program Coordinator for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s Joint Center for Earth Systems & Technology (JCET) since 2005, based at NASA GSFC.  Ms. Casasanto organizes and leads JCET’s student internship programs in Earth Sciences, and coordinates the GSFC office of JCET.  In addition, Ms. Casasanto is Principal Investigator for the NASA ROSES Education and Public Outreach (E/PO) award, Beautiful Earth: Experiencing and Learning Science in a New and Engaging Way ( engaging students and the general public in NASA Earth Science through music, art, and indigenous perspectives.  Ms. Casasanto is an education and outreach specialist with more than 20 years extensive experience in designing, managing and implementing small and large- scale earth and space science educational programs to diverse age groups and levels, in multidisciplinary multicultural and socially diverse environments.  She has successfully managed and integrated student designed and PI science microgravity payloads on 15 space missions including the Space Shuttle (STS-37, -43,-52,-56,-67,-95,- 107, -134, and -135), U.S. and Brazilian sounding rockets, parabolic aircraft, Mir station and ISS.

Ms. Casasanto is a graduate and former employee of the International Space University (ISU), where she organized the ISU Summer Programs in a different host country each year.  Ms. Casasanto is an active member and Vice-Chair of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) Space Education and Outreach Committee (since 2002), member of NASA Goddard’s Education Implementation Team (since 2006), and member of NASA Goddard’s Native American Advisory Committee (since 2008).
